Unlocking Your Body’s Wisdom: The Power of Somatic Movement

Listen to this episode here.

Hello - I'm Martha and I started dancing at age 8 with a tight body and a lot of imagination. I'm still dancing almost 60 years later with a looser body and lots of imagination, usually with others. I am also a somatic expert - applying somatic awareness - body awareness - to teaching dance, to coaching people to move into their greatness, and to become movement therapists - a holistic field that helps people move through their day with more ease of body and mind. I also dance - aerobically with cancer survivors and older adults (like myself, and my elders) moving with consciousness of how our bodies feel. That is called Moving For Life. Another form of dance evolved to become BodyMind Dancing because I enjoyed creating, as a hyperkinetic teen (what might be called ADHD these days), dance sequences. As a kinetic or kinesthetic learners it means I LEARN through moving. And something that keeps me aging with grace is that repeating movement sequences or certain gestures with meaning helps me remember ideas. Movement keeps blood flowing to the brain, relaxes us and keeps us thinking freshly. Dance is the most sophisticated movement form and usually builds community. Ancient cultures knew this. Indigenous cultures keep that value strong. Some martial arts are similar and have great outcomes for all people who practice them too.
